WE REVIEW “INTO THE WOODS” AT THEATRE 29

The Broadway hit musical “Into the Woods” opened last weekend at Theatre 29. Reporter Rebecca Havely attended and offers this review of the production…
Stephen Sondheim’s complex music and witty lyrics shine in the fairy tale musical “Into the Woods.” The award-winning duo of director Charles Harvey and musical director Kathryn Fuerguson bring together a truly ensemble piece of musical theatre. Earl Childs is a natural story teller as the narrator of this twisted tale told on a whimsical set. Theatre 29 favorites Chris Fleischman and Katie Van Sumeren lead the cast through the woods on a quest to reverse the curse of a witch, intensely played by Char Childs. They must beg, borrow and steal from others on their path: Little Red, played with gusto by Lisa Goldberg; the delightfully dim-witted Jack, played by Owen O’Brien; the unraveled Rapunzel, well played by Chalise Kunz; and Cinderella, wonderfully portrayed by Liyan Lagevardi. Humor is added to the mix by the handsome Princes, Ethan Flores and Benjamin Lacount II; the wicked Wolf, played by Charly Detinne; Little Red’s Granny, played by Kylie Robinson; and Israel Ruiz, as Jack’s cow, really milks the laughs.
Tickets for “Into the Woods” are $15 regular admission; $12 for seniors and military; and $8 for students with ID. “Into the Woods” has a more mature theme, so parental guidance is suggested for children under 12. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 and Sundays at 2:30 through May 21. For tickets visit theatre29.org or call the Theatre 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151.
