WE LOOK AT THE CANDIDATES FOR MORONGO UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD

Four candidates are vying for three seats on the Morongo Unfired School District Board. Reporter David Haldane takes a snapshot of all four…
Harmony. That’s pretty much what all four candidates for the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education say they want, particularly in light of the district’s recent struggle to forge a new contract with its teachers.
Beyond that there are differences. Karalee Hargrove and Ron Palmer, the two incumbents, say they favor more elective classes, specifically, in Palmer’s case, those that are career oriented. Hargrove also emphasizes the importance of transparency, while Palmer says he will work toward rebuilding trust in the wake of the adversarial atmosphere dominating the bargaining process.
The newcomers are Darin Sanden, who stresses reducing class size, and Denise Cohen, who wants to bring the arts back into school curriculums. Sanden also talks about finding alternatives to recently-terminated charter school programs, while Cohen favors establishing a “school-to-work” program for non-college bound students.
The four are vying for three seats up for grabs in November.
