VERMONT GMO LABELING LAW CHANGES LABELS IN CALIFORNIA

The country’s first mandatory genetically modified food labeling law went into effect this month in Vermont, but it has already forced disclosure in all 50 states, including California. Reporter David Haldane takes a look…
The food at your summer cookout may now come with a label saying its contains genetically modified organism. That’s because a first-of-its-kind law in Vermont took effect July 1, requiring all genetically modified foods to say so on the label. Andrew Kimbrel, with the nonprofit Center for Food Safety, says the groundbreaking law has already effected food sold across the country including California.
“Numerous companies—Campbell’s, General Mills, Con-Agra and others—have already labeled thousands, and thousands of products now have this labeling on it because a lot of companies do business in Vermont. So all of those companies are having to comply with the law.”
While many foods have had genetically altered ingredients for years, they’ve never been proven harmful. Still, opponents are pushing a Senate bill to pre-empt such laws in favor of weaker national food safety standards.
