TWENTYNINE PALMS WEED SHOW WINNERS

A busy weekend with perfect weather drew over 450 visitors—including some from Switzerland—to the Old Schoolhouse Museum for the Twentynine Palms Historical Society’s Annual Weed Show. The theme this year was All Rhyme, No Reason, and 35 individuals entered 146 compositions showcasing local desert weeds and appropriate accessories. The People’s Choice award went to Larry Bowden for his entry in the category Baa Baa Black Sheep, which required three related items as an accessory. Judges’ choice winners include Kim Ortamond in the Simple Simon category, which used a cooking item as an accessory; Pat Rimmington in the Old Mother Hubbard category, which required an item used by pioneers or homesteaders; and David Beeken in Baa Baa Black Sheep. The theme for this year’s Weed Show was All Rhyme, No Reason, with nursery rhymes for categories. First place winners are: Larry Bowden, who won the Queen of Hearts category, using museum-quality purple glass; Ted Meyers in Humpty Dumpty (broken purple glass) and Simple Simon; Lisa Pitts, in Eency Weency Spider (miniatures 3x3x3 inches); and David Beeken in Wee Willie Winkle (6x6x6 inches) and Baa Baa Black Sheep. The winner for the Old Mother Hubbard category, which required an item used by pioneers or homesteaders, was Kevin Cole. Kim Ortamond also won first place in Jack and Jill (using a water-related accessory); Molly Vermette won in Hickory Dickory Dock (using a timepiece accessory).
