TWENTYNINE PALMS WATER DISTRICT RAISES INSTALLATION FEES, PENALTIES OFFSET LOWER USE

The Twentynine Palms Water District board had a busy night with both water and fire business. Reporter Derwood Andrews was there and lets you know the decisions they made…
At last night’s Twentynine Palms Water District meeting, the Board of Directors decided to increase the service installation fees by an average of 24 percent. On the mid-year budget review, it was reported that water sales were down around six percent from the budget, but not of major concern and with penalties up due to late payments, it was almost a wash. In a discussion on ACWA Conferences, the subject of emergency preparedness came up and it was revealed that the Water District’s plan in place includes at least 72 hours of full service with back-up generators, if not more. In the Fire Department’s mid-year budget review, the expense numbers were about $20,000 off, due to the cost of the upcoming ballot measure. Residents of Twentynine should expect the ballot measure in the mail around the third week in March. The Board voted 5-to-0 yes to adopt a resolution to support the special fire tax and reach out to other local Boards to do the same. The Chief announced 2,493 calls for assistance in 2011.
