TWENTYNINE PALMS PLANNING COMMISSION LOOKS AT EXTENSION FOR COFFEE SHOP PLAN

The developer of a new coffee shop in Twentynine Palms will ask the Planning Commission for a fourth and final extension tonight. Reporter David Haldane has more on tonight’s meeting…
The Twentynine Palms Planning Commission meets tonight to consider granting a fourth and final one-year extension to a coffee shop construction plan initially approved in 2011.
In a memo to the commission, applicant Rick Rasof said the project has been thwarted by economic woes including a decline in property values that has made it difficult to secure the necessary funds.
His plan calls for the conversion of an existing 1,584 square-foot vacant building on the 72000 block of Twentynine Palms Highway to a coffee shop with 204 square feet of outdoor dining at its rear. According to local ordinances, the total number of extensions granted any project may not exceed four years.
In other business, the commission will discuss a comprehensive update of the city’s development code for which the public review period ends on Thursday.
The meeting gets underway 6 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
