TWENTYNINE PALMS MAN CRITICALLY INJURED IN HIT-AND-RUN BY ALLEGED DRUNK DRIVER

A Twentynine Palms man was critically injured Sunday evening when he was hit by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver who then fled the scene. According to a Sheriff’s report, Randy Miller and his wife were crossing Highway 62 in a crosswalk at Tamarisk Avenue about 7:50 when Robert Cummings, 54, allegedly hit Miller, launching him into the air and he landed about 50 feet away. Miller was taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs with critical injuries. Investigators say that Cummings then fled the scene. About 11:10 p.m., Sheriff’s dispatchers received a tip about the crash, and deputies went to the 6500 block of Hillside Avenue in Twentynine Palms where they found the suspect vehicle and contacted Cummings. Cummings was found to be under the influence of alcohol, and deputies say he admitted to being the driver of the vehicle, striking Miller, and fleeing the scene. Cummings was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run, booked at West Valley Detention Center, with his bail set at $100,000.
