TWENTYNINE PALMS HIGH SCHOOL NAMED A STATE GOLD RIBBON WINNER

Twentynine Palms High School has struck academic gold. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced 275 state-wide winners of the Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program yesterday. The honor replaces the California Distinguished Schools Program. Schools are lauded for doing a better job putting into action Common Core-based academic content and performance standards in English language arts, math, science and English language development. Common Core standards stress critical thinking and problem solving to prepare kids for life after high school. The schools feature excellent teaching, learning and collaborating, as well as successful conflict resolution and rewards for positive behavior, Torlakson said. Twentynine Palms High School was the only school in the Morongo Unified School District to get the prestigious recognition. The state recognized elementary schools last year. The winners will be honored in May.
