TWENTYNINE PALMS FAMILY EVACUATED AFTER MAN DRILLS INTO GAS PIPE

A military family was evacuated from their house in the 801 housing area in Twentynine Palms after the husband accidentally drilled a hole into a gas line. According to Twentynine Palms Engineer Tim Cole, the man was trying to install a wall-mounted television set when he drilled through the wall into the gas pipe, which was strapped next to the stud. Cole said the family left the home and called for help at 6:18 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they could hear the gas leaking from the pipe. Firefighters turned off the gas to the apartment in the 74400 block of Joe Davis Drive and aired out the home for 45 minutes to an hour. Cole said the military housing management company moved the family into another home for the night while the gas pipe was repaired. None of the other families in the apartment complex were affected.
