TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL WAIVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY BUILDING FEES

Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Probably not, though it may have appeared that way at last night’s meeting of the Twentynine Palms City Council. Reporter David Haldane was there and explains…
The Twentynine Palms Historical Society will spend less than expected expanding its Old Schoolhouse Museum. Housing the city’s tourists, on the other hand, will probably get more expensive. Both outcomes stemmed from last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting. Rejecting its staff’s recommendation, the Council voted unanimously to waive more than $48,000 in fees for the historical society’s planned construction of a 2,200-square-foot multipurpose room. The decision came after several speakers railed on its behalf. Then the Council declared its intention to impose a 1.5 percent nightly assessment on the city’s hotels, motels and vacation home rentals to fund the newly created Twentynine Palms Tourism Business Improvement District. A public hearing on the matter was set for October 10. In other business, the Council voted to rescind its Downtown Economic Revitalization Specific Plan for being out of date.
