TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL DEALS WITH SAFETY AND STREET SWEEPING

Last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting dealt, among other things, with keeping the streets safe and keeping them clean. Reporter David Haldane was there and files this story…
If you plan on driving through Twentynine Palms anytime soon, pay attention to the rules. That’s the biggest takeaway from a public safety report presented at last night’s City Council meeting by the county Sheriff’s Dept. Among other things, it showed the number of traffic citations more than doubling in 2016 with a corresponding decrease in major injury accidents.
All of that is good news.
Not so good is the fact that more people had their cars stolen than in any of the previous five years.
In other business, the Council voted to a hire a designated maintenance worker to drive the city’s only street sweeper which, until now, has been underutilized. The annual $120,000 price tag–to be covered by Burrtec Waste Hauling–will pay for supplies and equipment as well as the new employee’s salary.
Additional salaries approved last night include $3,000 a month for a lobbying firm to keep tabs on Sacramento.
