TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL DEALS WITH INFORMATION STORAGE AND ENERGY

Twentynine Palms may have its head in the clouds, but its feet seem firmly planted on the ground. At least, that’s how it looked at last night’s city council meeting. Reporter David Haldane was there and explains…
Imagine a city in the clouds. That’s an apt description of Twentynine Palm’s future, thanks to an action taken at last night’s city council meeting. Voting unanimously, the council awarded a six-year contract to a company called Rackspace to store its documents, records, and most paperwork on the Internet. In other words, to create its own private virtual cloud. The bottom line: for about $68,000 a year, the city’s online storage will be maintained by overseers in Texas.
In other business, the council: adopted a memorandum of understanding with a firm called Climatec LLC to review its energy systems with an eye toward lowering costs; selected specific boundaries for future district-based elections; and approved the $296,000 sale of a parcel to a developer for a new Starbucks at Highway 62 and Adobe Road.
