TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERS EXPANSION OF THEATRE 29 TONIGHT

Theater 29 has some far-reaching dreams for its future. Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council gets to take a look at, and perhaps judge, some of them. Reporter David Haldane has the story…
Theater 29 may soon have scenery that goes up and down. That’s just one element of an ambitious remodeling plan to be considered at tonight’s meeting of the Twentynine Palms City Council. Other proposed changes include increased seating capacity, a new stage, set storage, an outdoor concert stage, new billboard and extensive landscaping.
All told, engineering the project could cost up to $67,000 and building it another $450,000.
The independent nonprofit theater, founded in 1999 as a Parks and Recreation program to promote appreciation of the theater arts, now leases a city-owned building at 73637 Sullivan Road. In its 19-year history, according to a staff report, Theater 29 has produced 124 shows seen by about 15,000 patrons.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway 6 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
