TOP STORIES OF 2020, PART TWO IN A FOUR-PART SERIES

Continuing our four-part series of the top stories of 2020 are two big projects in Twentynine Palms: Project Phoenix, which we mentioned yesterday, and a wastewater treatment facility. The federal government’s budget for fiscal year 2020-21 included a $76 million appropriation for a wastewater treatment facility for the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center. City Manager Frank Luckino said the city and the Marine base will be collaborating on a joint use of the facility for both the base and the city.

Managing editor Tami Roleff says two proposed projects in Pioneertown were also big news…

Two proposed projects in Pioneertown were big news in 2020. One is a proposed 12-unit trailer motel on a three-quarter acre parcel across Pioneertown Road from the landmark Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace. The other is a proposed expansion of the 19-room Pioneertown Motel to include 47 guest cabins, a bunkhouse, stables, day spa, outdoor pool, retail and restaurant space, and a 3,500 square-foot event venue. The development would see the motel property triple in size. Both proposals remain a long way from approval as they must undergo review by multiple agencies and the planning commission, as well as a public review process and hearing.
