THREE LOCAL RESIDENTS RESCUED NEAR PALM SPRINGS TRAM MEMORIAL DAY

Three Morongo Basin residents were found early Tuesday morning after one of their wives reported them missing after a hike. Larry Duffield and Jason Popwski, of Joshua Tree, and Brian McBrayer of Yucca Valley, became stranded during a hike in Mt. San Jacinto State Park, west of Palm Springs, and were finally found unharmed following an hours-long search. The day hike began at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s mountain station, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The men set out around 8 a.m. Monday, Popwski’s wife reported she feared something may have happened when there was no sign of the men by nightfall. The Riverside County sheriff’s Mountain Rescue Unit and Search and Rescue Team were called out, as well as park rangers and tramway employees. Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Beatty said around 12:40 a.m., the three were located back near the trailhead at the mountain station. All were fine and taken back to the base of the mountain, according to the sergeant.
