TENSION HIGH AS JOSHUA BASIN WATER APPROVES INACTIVE METER FEES

Tension was high last night in Joshua Tree as the Joshua Basin Water District convened a public hearing on instituting a basic monthly fee for inactive accounts. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz was at the standing-room-only meeting. Hereā€™s what happenedā€¦
Last night, the Joshua Basin Water District board voted 4 to 1 in favor of charging a basic monthly fee for inactive accounts. Director Mike Reynolds was the lone holdout. Nearly three dozen residents turned out for the public hearing on the fee. Some 51 percent, or roughly 2,700, ratepayer protests could have stopped the fee, but only 78 written protests were submitted. Management and the Districtā€™s Citizenā€™s Advisory Committee recommended instituting the monthly charge to keep the Districtā€™s financial house in order. At present, about 1,200 accounts fall into the inactive category. Next year they are expected to provide just over $200,000 of additional income. So beginning January 1 a property owner with a Ā¾- or one-inch ā€œinactiveā€ meter will pay $24.80 per month. The fee will increase each year through 2018 at which time it will be $27.58.
