Two Joshua Tree men were arrested, accused of shooting a shotgun at an apartment. Deputies were called to the 61800 block of Verbena Road in Joshua Tree just before 6 p.m. Tuesday because neighbors heard a loud argument followed by gunshots. Deputies determined that John Delaney, 26, and Darrell Mathis, 42, had driven to the location in Mathis’ car to fight the residents. During the fight, Delaney produced a shotgun and fired at the apartment. The family inside the apartment was not injured during the shooting. Delaney and Mathis then fled to their home in the 4800 block of Avenida La Espana Daga in Joshua Tree, where deputies located them about an hour later. John Delaney was arrested for investigation of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and was booked at the West Valley Detention Center with his bail set at $250,000. Darrell Mathis was arrested on suspicion of shooting at a dwelling and as an accessory, and was booked at the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $250,000.
A Yucca Valley man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly shot a gun at another man’s vehicle. Shortly before 11 a.m., the victim and Derek Carter, 35, had an argument at a Yucca Valley convenience store. Both men left, and while driving away, the victim said Carter brandished a firearm and fired it at his car near Elk and Navajo Trails. The victim called to report the shooting. Deputies found Carter’s vehicle at his home in the 55800 block of Mountain View Trail in Yucca Valley. Deputies obtained a search warrant, and inside the house they found evidence linking Carter to the shooting. Derek Carter was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, booked at the Morongo Basin Jail, with his bail set at $50,000.
The Sheriff’s Department has released more information about a shooting that killed one person and injured two others in Joshua Tree Wednesday. Just before 2 p.m., Teri Weller, 63, heard a shot inside a house in the 4400 block of Sunever Road. When she went inside, she found Geri Weller, 63, suffering from a gunshot wound. Gene Weller, 89, was also in the room armed with a handgun; Teri was able to wrestle the gun away from him. Moments later, Dondi Moore, 51, entered the room and warned Teri that Gene had armed himself with a second handgun. Almost immediately, Gene shot Moore; Teri, fearing for her safety, then shot Gene. Gene Weller remains hospitalized in critical condition; Moore is also hospitalized and is expected to survive. Geri Weller died at the scene. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
We have limited information about a shooting in Joshua Tree Wednesday afternoon. Three people were shot, one of whom was killed. At 1:55 p.m., deputies and paramedics were called to the 4400 block of Sunever Road for a fatal shooting. Beside the victim who was killed, one person was transported by air to a local trauma hospital, and one person was taken by ground ambulance. Sheriff’s Captain Luke Niles said there is no danger to the community. Z107.7 will update this story when more information is available.
Sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help in a shooting at a Joshua Tree house Tuesday. About 6:45 p.m., a resident in the 60400 block of Natoma Trail called to report that someone had shot a gun at the house. A bullet hole was found in the side of the home, and the bullet was found in the home’s bathroom. No one was injured. Anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
