A Riverside man was arrested by Yucca Valley deputies following a 35-mile high-speed chase early Saturday morning. Deputies tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle on Old Woman Springs Road near Hillcrest Drive in Yucca Valley about 3:30 a.m. The driver, later identified as Samuel Deckard, 19, failed to yield and sped off northbound on OWS at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. Lucerne Valley deputies set up a spike strip on Old Woman Springs Road near Oakdale Avenue in Lucerne Valley. The spike strip was successful and disabled Deckard’s vehicle. Deckard was taken in to custody by Yucca Valley deputies without further incident. Deputies located a handgun, ammunition, and a large capacity magazine located inside Deckard’s vehicle; Deckard is a convicted felon and on probation. Samuel Deckard was arrested for investigation of reckless evading of a peace officer and being a felon in possession of a firerm; booked into the West Valley Detention Center with his bail set at $100,000.
A juvenile was arrested following a suspicious fire in Twentynine Palms Sunday night. Deputies had been called to the 700 block of Canyon Road bout 6:37 p.m., because a juvenile was upset with his mother over breaking his computer. The Sheriff’s report said the 17-year-old boy was going to shoot her and burn the place down. The woman left the location in fear for her life. While alone, the juvenile allegedly poured gasoline in the living room and set it on fire. Firefighters were called about 8:15 p.m., and for safety concerns, they waited until deputies arrived to clear the scene. Firefighters found a mobile home, an RV trailer, two cars, and many other items on fire in a homestead compound that had no utilities or power to the site. Crews knocked down the fire in about 20 minutes and they were on scene about five hours mopping up. Deputies located the boy who had tried to flee on an off-road vehicle. The boy was arrested for investigation of arson and making criminal threats, and taken to San Bernardino Juvenile Hall.
A Yucca Valley convicted felon was arrested Thursday, after he was found with a firearm. According to a Sheriff’s report, deputies assisted probation officers on a compliance check at the home of Charles McAaron, 41, in the 7200 block of Sunny Place in Yucca Valley about 1:30 Thursday afternoon. Deputies discovered a firearm within arm’s reach of McAaron. Charles McAaron was arrested on investigation of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $50,000.
A Yucca Valley woman was shot—and later arrested—by deputies after she fired a rifle at them Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 1400 block of Avalon Avenue in the Yucca Mesa area of Yucca Valley about 2:18 p.m. for a domestic disturbance. A man and child were outside the home when deputies arrived, and said that Cara Burghardt, 37, was in the home and acting erratically. As deputies approached, Burghardt left the house and fired at deputies, at which time they returned fire. Burghardt was injured and taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs for treatment. After her release from the hospital, Cara Burghardt was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, booked into the West Valley Detention Center, with her bail set at $50,000. The rifle was later determined to be a pellet rifle.
We have limited information about a deputy-involved shooting in the Yucca Mesa area of Yucca Valley. Deputies were called to the 1400 block of Avalon Avenue at 2:18 p.m. for a domestic disturbance where the shooting occurred. A Sheriff’s spokeswoman said a female suspect was shot; she was treated at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and released, at which time she was arrested by deputies for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. Her name has not been released yet. Detectives from the Specialized Investigations team are investigating.
