SOMEONE IS MISSING A WANDERING, RARE, 70-POUND TORTOISE

Wandering strays aren’t all that rare in our Morongo Basin, unless of course, the stray in question is a 70-pound African Sulcata  tortoise. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has this very unusual report …
Debra Walters was visiting her mom in the 53900 block of Ridge Road in Yucca Valley and couldn’t believe her eyes when another visitor turned up the driveway. It was an almost 70-pound tortoise. Walters watched in awe as the 28-inch long creature made his way up the steep drive and around the back of the house ignoring her barking dog along the way. With two dogs, two exotic birds, and a Mojave Desert tortoise, Walters’ mom, Millie Schaub, is an undeniable pet lover. Perhaps the new arrival recognized this as he has made himself at home in the intervening month since he first arrived. Schaub says the beast, which can grow to be 200 pounds, can consume in a single day: a couple apples and carrots, a head of lettuce, half a watermelon, and a cantaloupe. Where the rare reptile came from remains a mystery, but Walters and Schaub want to see him returned to his rightful owner.
Although a listener from Pipes Canyon called Z107.7 this morning to report the tortoise is hers, and Mike Lipsitz has confirmed that Pedro is not her missing tortoise. If you think this Sulcata tortoise is yours, please contact Z107.7 at 760-366-8471.
