SOLAR POWER USES IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

Lost amidst the hubbub over commercial solar energy generation are many quiet site-specific implementations of solar power.  Ranger Pam Tripp tells how it’s used at Joshua Tree National Park…

Solar power is one of the most environmentally friendly sources of power available today. With the help of our bright desert sun, Joshua Tree National Park is using solar power to run our campground amphitheaters at Jumbo Rocks and Indian Cove. At the south end of the park, the Cottonwood Visitor Center, campground amphitheater and residences have run completely on the power of the sun for many years. And in the northern are of Twentynine Palms, our maintenance facility at park headquarters uses solar power, which helps us to cut down on the amount of electricity used annually.  Even our Night Sky programs are experiencing the benefits of the use of solar power. The vehicle we are using to transport equipment and conduct night sky programs uses solar panels to provide power to the telescope and projectors.  This renewable energy source is certainly a natural fit for the National Park Service and the desert environment at Joshua Tree National Park.  `For Z107.7, this is Park Ranger Pam Tripp, inviting you to celebrate 75 years of inspiration at Joshua Tree National Park.
