SHERIFF’S CAPTAIN JEFF JOLING RETIRING, NEW SHERIFF COMING TO TOWN

There is a new Sheriff coming to town. Sheriff John McMahon promoted Lieutenant Trevis Newport to the rank of captain January 11. Captain Newport will take over as the commander of the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station from Captain Jeff Joling on Saturday, January 20. Joling is retiring Friday, January 19, after 29 years of service with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Newport has been with the County Sheriff’s Department for 18 years, including three tours of duty (six years) with the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station. Before his promotion, Newport worked as a deputy, corporal, and detective at the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station. He was the lead homicide detective who worked the Erin Corwin murder case. His last assignment prior to being promoted to captain was with the Sheriff’s Bureau of Administration, where he was responsible for a $634 million operating budget. Newport is married with three children.
