SHERIFF SWITCHES COMMUNICATIONS, SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR SCANNER

Say good-bye to your police scanners. As of today, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is switching over to encrypted digital radios. A Sheriff’s press release says the new $160 million system will enhance coverage throughout the county, improve the voice clarity, and strengthen the signal. In addition, the new system is in use by law enforcement agencies in the county and the state, allowing for different agencies to be able to talk to each other easily. In response to resident concerns that the change to digital radios will inhibit the public’s right to know what is happening around them, the release states that criminals will also be in the dark about whether law enforcement is coming for them. The Sheriff’s Department states that more press releases are being published than ever before, and it is also notifying the public of events through social media.
