SHERIFF INVESTIGATING CASE OF CHECK FRAUD

The Sheriff’s Department is investigating a case of check fraud, in which the suspect whited out the recipient’s name and inserted their own name. According to a Sheriff’s report, the victim had her mail stolen from her mailbox in Joshua Tree sometime in February. When the victim received a cancellation notice from her insurance company, she went to her bank, and showed them the receipt for the cashier’s check for $488 for the insurance payment. The bank determined that the suspect had whited out the insurance company’s name on the check and added their own name, which Union Bank then cashed. Anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
