SCIENCE CAMP A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR AREA SIXTH GRADERS

Even while local sixth graders are getting back from their annual science camp experience, fund-raising is already beginning for next year. Reporter Mike Lipsitz takes a closer look…
For sixth-grade students throughout Morongo Basin, science camp is akin to a rite of passage. Often, it’s the first time a child will set off on an extended adventure without either parent. “Yes, sometimes there are tears… from parents, not the kids,” says Landers Elementary School Principal John Lowe. Last week, while Landers’ sixth graders were away for science camp at Lake Arrowhead, Lowe took time to explain the program to a contingent from the Landers Association. They were there to present a $300 contribution toward next year’s Science Camp. Lowe introduced them to Roy Person’s fifth grade class; already they have begun raising funds for their trip. The five days of science-based, hands-on learning in the field runs more than $400 per student. The lessons they bring back are likely to last a lifetime.
