SCHOOL BOARD REVIEWS COMPETING CHARTER SCHOOLS TONIGHT

The Morongo Unified School Board meets in regular session tonight. Reporter David Haldane says charter schools are the dominating agenda item…
The hot-button question of which charter school will serve the Morongo Unified School District may be resolved at the board of education’s regular meeting tonight.
On one hand, the board will consider a staff recommendation to deny certification to Hope Academy, the school that’s been serving the district for five years. On the other, it will hold a public hearing on a petition by the Hi-Desert Cultural Center to create a new school called the Joshua Tree Arts & Technology Academy.
According to a staff report, written after an emotional public hearing on the matter last month, the district should bid adieu to Hope Academy because the school “presents an unsound educational program” and is unlikely to fulfill the requirements of its charter.
The meeting gets under way 7 p.m. at Joshua Tree Elementary School on Sunburst Drive.
