SCHOOL BOARD PUBLIC HEARING ON HOPE CHARTER SCHOOL LICENSE TONIGHT

The first of two charter school applications will be the subject of a public hearing at tonight’s Morongo Unified School Board meeting. Reporter David Haldane takes a closer look…
Is the Morongo Basin about to embark on an epic battle of the charter schools? If so, the first volley may well be fired tonight when the Morongo Unified School District conducts a public hearing on Hope Academy’s petition for recertification.
The academy, the district’s only charter school, is asking to be licensed again after serving students in Yucca Valley for the last five years.
But now there’s a new kid on the block; the High-Desert Cultural Center which is petitioning to start a new charter school called the Joshua Tree Arts & Technology Academy.
School officials have said they could approve both petitions, or turn both of them down. At least part of the decision may be obvious after tonight’s public hearing, which gets underway 7 p.m. at Onaga Elementary School in Yucca Valley. A hearing on the other petition, the board says, will be scheduled soon.
