SCHOOL BOARD MOVED THROUGH A BRISK MEETING LAST NIGHT

The Morongo Unified School District Board of Education moved briskly through the agenda of its August 4 meeting. Reporter Dan Stork tells what happened…
Morongo Unified School District Director of Facilities Ron Smith briefed the school board at Tuesday’s meeting on energy efficiency projects funded by Prop 39. The $1.125 million project will replace HVAC units at Yucca Mesa Elementary, and install LED exterior lights throughout the district, and replace as many outmoded T12 fluorescent interior fixtures as possible. Assistant Superintendent Doug Weller announced that 21 new teachers have been hired, and five positions are left to be filled. The board approved single plans for student achievement for Yucca Valley High School, and Friendly Hills, Condor, and Twentynine Palms Elementary Schools. Of the board policies up for consideration, those on bullying, before- and after-school programs, meals and refreshments for employees and non-employees, and travel expenses were approved, while those on head lice, employee use of technology, naming of facility, and school plans and site councils were held over for a second reading.
