PROPOSAL TO LIMIT BOATING ON LAKE HAVASU SUSPENDED

Of interest to local residents who spend time at the river, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal to limit recreational boating activities at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge was suspended earlier this week. After being flooded with public comments and legislative efforts against the proposal, the Fish and Wildlife Service said earlier this week it will re-evaluate information before issuing a final decision. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was proposing to make changes to boating activities near Lake Havasu and the National Wildlife Refuge in the Topock Marsh. Proposed restrictions included prohibiting motors larger than 30 horsepower and requiring no-wake speeds in the marsh; and adding a two-mile no-wake extension to the current 17.5-mile restricted boating area. No new restrictions will be placed on the California side of the river.
