PICK-UP TRUCK STOLEN TWICE IN 24 HOURS; SUSPECT DETAINED

A pick-up was stolen two times in less than 24 hours, and the suspected thief is in custody after he allegedly led police on an early morning pursuit Thursday. Desert Hot Springs police say that Manuel Montenegro, 19, of Cathedral City, stole a truck Wednesday evening from the 11100 block of Mesquite Avenue and then abandoned it about 3 a.m. Thursday. The owner was called and he recovered his stolen truck, but it was stolen a second time about 6:45 a.m. Thursday. As police were taking the second stolen vehicle report, another officer saw Montenegro driving the stolen truck in the area of 6th Street and Cactus Drive in Desert Hot Springs. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but Montenegro led officers in a pursuit. As Montenegro approached the 66500 block of Buena Vista Avenue, he tried to jump out of the moving truck and flee on foot. The truck crashed into a palm tree and overturned. Montenegro, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, was captured after a short foot pursuit. Manuel Montenegro was arrested for investigation of grand theft auto, felony evading,
