Cal State San Bernardino annually rewards students with the Desert Literary Award for excellence in writing. One of this year’s recipients is Morongo Valley resident Debra Freeland, for her fictional short story, “Blurred Vision,” that discusses the memoirs of a young woman finding herself in an abusive relationship and her journey to self-discovery. Freeland, a 50-year-old mother of six who also came from an abusive relationship, chose to share her story. “I want women to understand that there is no shame, there is no stigma with anyone that has been in an abusive relationship.” She gives thanks to her mentor and Creative Writing Professor Steven Lehigh, for encouraging her to enter the competition as well as her supportive family. Debra is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in English literature and plans to go directly into graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing.
