MORONGO VALLEY MAN ACCUSED OF BRANDISHING A KNIFE AT A STORE CLERK

A Morongo Valley man was arrested Saturday, after he threatened a store clerk with a knife. Deputies were called to a gas station convenience store in the 49500 block of 29 Palms Highway in Morongo Valley about 6:15 p.m. Saturday. The clerk said he had asked the man, later identified as Donald Rather, 64, to leave the store and had approached him to make sure he left. As he did so, Rather pulled out a steak knife, gestured with it toward the clerk, and said he was going to stab the clerk, before leaving the store. Deputies located Rather nearby, as well as the knife. Donald Rather was arrested for investigation of making criminal threats, and brandishing a weapon, booked into the West Valley Detention Center, with his bail set at $75,000.
