MORONGO BASIN MAC SHOULD SEE CALTRANS DOWNTOWN JOSHUA TREE PLAN TONIGHT

Anyone who’s ever walked or driven through Joshua Tree’s business district knows that it can sometimes be risky. After outlining a plan to fix that, a Caltrans spokesman was tardy in providing the details. Reporter David Haldane says that may be corrected tonight…
Joshua Tree residents holding their breaths for details on a plan to slow traffic through downtown may soon be able to inhale. A Caltrans update originally scheduled nearly two months ago is finally on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council.
Among other things, the plan calls for narrowing Highway 62 by carving out a dedicated bike lane and restriping parking lanes from parallel to diagonal. After receiving tentative approval, a representative of the state transportation agency promised to provide details in March but then canceled at the last minute.
Already underway is a $4.7 million project to add left-turn lanes from just west of Torres Avenue to just east of Lee Drive.
Tonight’s meeting starts 6:30 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst Avenue.
