Gates, signs and trails. Oh yes, and a permanent potty. Those are the main ingredients of a $300,000 project planned by the county to secure Section 6, a 605-acre desert parcel bisected by Onaga Trail near Joshua Tree’s Quail Springs Road. For some time now, the area has been plagued by illegal campers who start bonfires, unleash dogs, and poop on the ground.
Frank Haggard, San Bernardino County’s district services coordinator, thinks the work can be completed in 18 months, he told a packed meeting of the Morongo Municipal Advisory Council last night. Some of his listeners expressed impatience, advocating that automobile access be halted now with boulders and bulldozers.
Haggard admitted that enforcement is a problem, calling on area residents to help. To volunteer, he said, call the Joshua Tree Community Center at 760-366-8415.
