MISSING HIKER FOUND ALIVE IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

A 76-year-old hiker, who had been missing in Joshua Tree National Park since Saturday, was found alive about 11 a.m. Tuesday by searchers. David Sewell, who is legally blind, had gone to the park to go hiking in Johnny Lang Canyon Saturday. He parked his car in the Quail Springs parking lot in the park with a note that if he had not returned by Sunday, he would need assistance. Park rangers found his vehicle Sunday and began a search using dogs and helicopters early Monday. A park spokesman said Sewell was conscious and talking when searchers found him. Due to the distance and nature of the terrain, Sewell was evacuated out of the park by a CHP helicopter to the Quail Springs parking lot where he was transported by Morongo Basin Ambulance to Hi-Desert Medical Center. His condition at this time is unknown.
