MARINE BASE COMMANDING GENERAL BERGER TO TAKE COMMAND OF 1MEF

The commanding general of both the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command and the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Maj. Gen. David Berger, will become commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, the Defense Department announced Wednesday.

The 1st MEF is based at Camp Pendleton. With the move, Berger will be promoted to lieutenant general. Berger was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1981. After serving as company commander and battalion operations officer in the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion during Operation Desert Storm, he later commanded Regimental Combat Team 8 in Fallujah during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the 1st Marine Division (Forward) in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. General Bergerā€™s promotion and appointment as commander of 1st MEF must be confirmed by the Senate.
