MAN WHO LED DEPUTIES IN CHASE FOUND HIDING IN A BATHROOM

A Twentynine Palms man suspected of leading a deputy in a pursuit in a stolen vehicle  was found hiding in a bathroom. The Sheriff’s Department said Deputy Jason Jimenez attempted to stop a gray Nissan Altima about 1:22 a.m. Sunday morning near Mesquite Avenue and Gorgonio Drive in Twentynine Palms for failing to stay in its lane. Demetrius Hughes, 25, fled and drove around the block before stopping at the corner of Joshua Drive and Ocotillo Avenue. Hughes fled from the car and was later found hiding in the bathroom of his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in the 6300 block of Palo Verde Avenue. The investigation revealed that Hughes had taken the car without permission. Demetrius Hughes was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto, and on warrants for driving without a valid driver’s license, no proof of insurance, and speeding. Hughes was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $75,000.
