LOOTING CAUSES CLOSURE OF TWO HISTORICAL SITES IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

Joshua Tree National Park officials have temporarily closed two historical sites in the park due to looting. Due to recent press and social media postings, the number of visitors to Carey’s Castle and the El Sid Mine have increased and historic artifacts have disappeared. Park Superintendent David Smith said the sites will be reopened when the park service has the tools to monitor the areas and prevent any further losses. The closures take effect immediately and will remain in effect until further notice.
