LANDERS RESIDENTS MASS AGAINST SOLAR PROJECT, WILL APPEAL TODAY

The firm that wants to build a solar field in Landers arranged to meet with residents who were looking to appeal the approval of that project by the San Bernardino County Planning Commission. Reporter Dan Stork says the dialog that resulted was not to the firm’s liking…
Following a mid-day Saturday community meeting in Landers, we spoke with Garrett Bean, a representative of S Power, the company that wants to build a solar field on 35 acres in Landers. He characterized it as a “good meeting,” and acknowledged the passion of the community on the issue. Bean said he is trying to work with residents and find solutions to problems raised. He also noted that people expressed frustration with how San Bernardino County is dealing with the project, but said “we’re not the County,” and that he wants to make a good project. He said that an appeal of the County Planning Commission decision to grant a permit for the project would be unfortunate, in that it would divert money from both his budget and the community. He added that he plans to reach out to organizers of the appeal, regardless. He had told the residents that grading that had been done in advance of the permit had been done on a right of way by Edison, not by his firm.
Mike Lipsitz, the Landers representative to the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council, told us that the roughly 80 residents who turned out for the meeting on one-day’s notice, were unanimously against having the project constructed in any form, and were unanimously in favor of an appeal. At the meeting, a sum was raised that was well in excess of the $1200 needed to file an appeal, which the Landers Association plans to do by the 5 p.m. December 15 deadline.
