LANDERS ASSOCIATION REDIRECTING TIRES FROM DESERT DUMPS TO RECYCLING PROGRAMS

According to California’s Department of Resource Recycling and Recovery, or CalRecycle, motorists in our state discard more than 42 million vehicle tires each year. It’s no secret that many of those tires are illegally discarded along our rural roads and open desert. Reporter Mike Lipsitz says that folks in Landers are doing something about it…

For about $5.25 each, tires may be disposed of at the Landers Landfill, but for what may ultimately be a greater cost, many tires are illegally dumped in desert washes, along rural roads, on private properties … just about everywhere. Now, thanks to a grant from CalRecycle, the Landers Association and County Code Enforcement have organized a tire amnesty program. People living in and around Landers can dispose of tires free of charge at Homestead Valley Park on Belfield Blvd. in Landers. Unlike prior tire round ups, tires with or without rims, and tires of any size may be brought in; tires cannot be accepted from any tire generating businesses. All tires collected are destined for recycling programs. The effort runs through 12 noon Saturday, December 2.
