KING OF THE HAMMERS RESULTS: LOCALS TAKE A CLASS FIRST AT “KING OF THE HAMMERS”

Only four drivers have won the King of the Hammers race twice, and Erik Miller of Maryland is now a member of that elite group, winning what is called the world’s toughest, one-day off-road race last Friday in 7 hours, 30 minutes. Miller won the grueling 167-mile off-road race in Johnson Valley for the first time in 2012, and came in second in 2013. Jason Scherer, who won in 2009, came in second Friday, 25 minutes behind Miller. Raul Gomez came in third, 53 minutes behind Miller. The race was three laps through open desert and through rocky canyons with names like Chocolate Thunder, Wrecking Ball, and Jackhammer. When Miller was on the stage accepting his first place trophy and check, he asked his girlfriend to marry him; she said yes.

In a clarification of a story we aired Friday, a local team took top honors Thursday in the Smittybuilt “Everyman Challenge,” designed for the average off-roader. Driving a Jeep built to compete with off-the-shelf-parts, Brian Behrend from Cathedral City and Joey Etter of Yucca Valley placed first in the EMC stock class. A team spokesman said Etter and Behrend took every second of the time clock to complete 115 miles through desert and rocks starting at 8 a.m. and crossing the finish line at 6 p.m. The two have been competing in King of the Hammers for five years now and were elated to finally take the win. They said, “We are happily looking for local sponsors and now have a GoFund me page. A picture of the team and their vehicle can be seen in a story in this story at z1077fm.com
