JOSHUA TREE CEMETERY DAMAGED DURING CRIMINAL PURSUIT

Deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating a Twentynine Palms man suspected of damaging the Joshua Tree Memorial Park and fleeing from deputies Saturday morning. About 6 a.m., deputies were investigating two suspicious vehicles inside the cemetery in the 60100 block of 29 Palms Highway. During a vehicle check, the deputies recognized one of the drivers as Gilbert Gonzalez, 31, who has warrants for his arrest in San Bernardino and Orange Counties for separate vehicle thefts. Gonzalez fled from deputies, driving through the cemetery grounds, severely damaging the property. Gonzalez fled eastbound on the highway and a vehicle pursuit ensued. Deputies called off the pursuit when entering the city of Twentynine Palms for safety reasons. Gonzalez’s vehicle was located abandoned near the intersection of Sunnyslope Drive and Datura Avenue; Gonzalez had fled on foot into the neighborhood and was not located. During an area check subsequent to the pursuit, two Sheriff’s patrol vehicles were involved in a collision on Two Mile Road near Alpine Avenue. A warrant has been issued for Gilbert Gonzalez’s arrest. He is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighs 180 pounds. Anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
