JOSHUA BASIN WATER WRESTLES WITH NEXTERA, PROBLEM WELL LAST NIGHT

The Joshua Basin Water District Board met last night. A controversial request for water for a solar field and a troublesome well dominated the meeting. Reporter Mike Lipsitz files this report…
Last night in Joshua Tree, the Joshua Basin Water District board of directors drilled through an ambitious agenda. Highlights included a discussion of some suggestively underhanded efforts by NextEra Energy to secure the water they need for construction of the firm’s industrial-scale solar development at the sight of the old Joshua Tree Airport. The situation places the district in the awkward position of complying with strict water conservation directives while experiencing significant pressure to come through for NextEra. Also last night, the board learned that the district’s workhorse well 14 is showing the signs of deferred maintenance in the form of a 15 percent decline in production and should be considered a priority for a major and expensive overhaul. And in a show of confidence, the board re-elected Victoria Fuller President; Mickey Luckman Vice President.
