IT’S HOT OUT, DON’T LEAVE DOGS IN CARS

Animal control officers respond to many calls every month for dogs left in parked cars, predominantly in commercial retail center and supermarket parking lots. Reporter Rebecca Havely goes over some of the consequences of leaving your four-legged friend in your vehicle during the summer…
Good Samaritans call animal control officers about dogs left in parked cars many times every month. Some of the actions taken by animal control may be as simple as providing education to the animal owner, to taking enforcement actions, which will require the owner to appear in court. Residents are reminded to leave their pets at home, so that the animals aren’t left in a hot car when the owners go shopping or run errands. When the outside temperature is 100 degrees, the temperature inside a car, even with the windows cracked, can rise to 140 degrees in 15 minutes, resulting in brain damage or death to the animal inside the vehicle. Leave your dog at home.
