IMMINENT COUNTY TAKEOVER OF TWENTYNINE PALMS FIRE CAN BE PROTESTED

In February the Local Agency Formation Commission voted to move forward on a plan for county fire department to take over fire protection services from the Twentynine Palms Water District. The Commission’s decision, however, is not necessarily the last word on the matter. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz explains…
The Local Agency Formation Commission’s decision will be final unless LAFCO hears from significant numbers of the public in large numbers. In what’s called a “protest ballot,” LAFCO must receive protest forms from at least 50 percent of registered voters and property owners in the area affected to kill the plan. Protests from 25 percent to 49 percent would trigger a special election on the matter. And protests from less than 25 percent means the annexation would move forward. Constituents in favor of the plan need do nothing. Those opposed may register their protest until the end of a LAFCO public hearing which convenes at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 25. It takes place in the Joshua Room of the San Bernardino County Government Center, 385 North Arrowhead in San Bernardino. Eligible voters and property owners within the affected area should have received information and a protest form from LAFCO via U.S. Mail.
