HIGH WINDS AFFECT VISIBILITY, 15-CAR CRASH INJURES 28 IN LUCERNE VALLEY

Blowing dust and sand driven by winds of up to 50 miles per hour buffeted our Morongo Basin yesterday. Some minor power outages were reported and minor wind damage. High winds made driving a struggle. To our immediate north, a pileup involving more than 15 cars in Lucerne Valley Monday left 28 people injured and Barstow Road/Highway 247 shut down at Rabbit Springs Road. The crash, reported at 3:21 p.m., was caused by a big rig crashing into a van during a dust storm that caused zero visibility, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department. As first responders were treating the injured in the first crash, about a dozen other vehicles piled into the original collision. San Bernardino County firefighters treated multiple people at the crash scene; authorities said 25 people suffered minor injuries and three were taken by ambulances to hospitals. A 15-mile portion of Barstow Road was completely closed at 4:53 p.m. north of Rabbit Springs Road. A high wind warning remained in effect until Tuesday; mountains and deserts in San Bernardino and Riverside counties experienced gusts of 70 to 80 mph. The winds diminished today.
