The Twentynine Palms Wildcat football team won a very important De Anza league contest, 47-30, Friday night against Coachella Valley High School, a game which featured two teams hoping for the second-place playoff spot for the league. The Wildcats went up 40-14 late in the third quarter before Coachella Valley scored 16 points in the final quarter to close within 10 points. A blocked field goal with 5 minutes left in the game allowed the ’Cats to drive 60 yards for the final touchdown of the game and the 47-30 win. The Wildcats set a school record for total offensive yards in the game with 685 yards of offense, while their defense held the league’s leading passing team nearly 150 yards short of their average, in an outstanding effort.
The Wildcats fell behind on the opening play of the game as Coachella Valley took the opening kickoff 90 yards for the first score of the game. However, the Wildcats would quickly answer as they went 80 yards in only four plays. Junior running back Hunter Tygart ran 68 yards for the first of his two touchdowns, and 185 rushing yards rushing for the game. The point after failed and the ’Cats trailed 7-6 early in the first.
After an outstanding defensive stand, the Wildcats would score on their next series, as junior quarterback D’Shaun Barrett would lead the team on a 55-yard scoring drive. Barrett found junior Adam Bell on a 6-yard touchdown pass and the Wildcats took a lead they would not surrender into the second quarter.
The ’Cats moved the ball well in the quarter, taking a 19-7 lead, after senior Derek Sutherland took a reverse play 40 yards for third touchdown of the game for the home team. Sutherland added another interception later in the quarter for his tenth of the season, which places him as the state leader in defensive interceptions so far this season. A 50-yard run by Coachella Valley in the second quarter sent the two teams into half time with the score of 19-14.
On the first play of the third quarter, Hunter Tygart ran 55 yards around the left end for his second score of the game and a 26-14 lead. After another defensive stand, Barrett found senior Eneliko Tuli on a 70-yard screen pass for his second touchdown pass of the game. The final score of the third quarter was an outstanding pass play by senior quarterback Hugh Carpenter, as he found Barrett in the left corner of the end zone on a 28-yard touchdown play. Ryan Stowers made his fourth of five point-after attempts, and the home team led 40-14 after three quarters.
Carpenter tossed the final touchdown pass of the game, when he found Adam Bell in the corner of the end zone to seal the victory, in the final series of the game.
Offensive leaders for the contest were D’Shaun Barrett, Eneliko Tuli, Derek Sutherland, Hunter Tygart, Adam Bell, and Hugh Carpenter. Barrett was 15 of 21 for 243 yards passing with two touchdowns. He also had 60 yards rushing and 33 yards receiving. Carpenter was eight of 10 passing with two touchdowns and 120 yards. Bell had two touchdown receptions to lead all receivers and 66 yards receiving. Tuli had seven receptions for 141 yards and Sutherland had nine catches for 105 yards. Tygart had 15 carries for 185 yards.
Defensively, K.J. Magwood, Sam Eggers, Michael Clark, and Hunter Tygart led the team in tackles. Magwood had two quarterback sacks and two tackles for a loss. Eggers and Clark teamed up for 15 tackles on the game. Tygart had five total tackles on the game.
