Twentynine Palms High School girls’ basketball won over Yucca Valley High School, 56 to 54, to start the season with two wins and 0 losses in league. Coach Timothy Stanford said Hope Culver led the team in scoring with 16 points. Lindsey Scamman had six points, 20 rebounds, and six assists while quarterbacking the offense most of the night. Gabby Mackall added nine points and Destiny Dedmon coming back from her early season knee injury added seven points. Yucca Valley High School varsity boys’ soccer played a home league game on Friday, January 13, versus Twentynine Palms High School. The final score was a loss, 3-1.

Coach Jorge Rodriguez said junior Aldo Villalba scored the only goal. Aldo was named player of the match by coach Rodriguez, who said, “Our guys played well tonight. We stayed focused the entire game and we had plenty of opportunities to score. We give credit to a well-coached Twentynine Palms team.” Twentynine Palms High School junior varsity played a home league game on Friday, January 13 versus Twentynine Palms High School; the final score was a 0-to-0 tie. Coach Adan Mendoza said player of the match was freshman Marcelo Noble. “Marcelo maintained high pressure during the entire game and had a few shots on goal.” The Twentynine Palms High School Wildcat boys’ soccer teams began road league play against the Trojans of Yucca Valley on Friday night, winning 3-1. The victory pushes the varsity ’Cats’ record to 10 wins, 5 losses and 3 draws.

The varsity Wildcats again played strong team defense in the first half for a 0-0 tie. The ’Cats organized offensively and then scored three goals in the second half for a 3-1 away victory. Senior goalkeeper KJ Magwood earned his fourth victory in four years against the Trojans. Senior Nick Stowers scored two goals and junior Miguel Sosa scored the decisive goal late in the second half. Sophomore Dante Smith-Evans assisted both Stowers and Sosa. The JV team fought hard for a 0-0 draw. Strong team defense led to keeper Juan Duran’s first shutout of the season. Duran had six saves. Midfielders Nathan Delacruz and Manuel Romero anchored the defense in front of a strong back line. The junior varsity ’Cats team record now moves to 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw. The Twentynine Palms High School girls’ junior varsity and varsity soccer teams played Yucca Valley High School. The JV girls suffered a 2-0 loss to the Trojans while the Varsity team lost 8-0.
