HI-DESERT TEST KITCHEN DINING TONIGHT

Around this time each month we announce the native food to be highlighted at High Desert Test Kitchen’s informal dinner. But this month and next, organizer Sarah Witt suggests we focus on something altogether different. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells us what that is…

Witt places a premium on sustainable harvesting and being better stewards of the environment. For this month’s dinner gathering, during winter’s respite, she suggests we leave the plant kingdom alone and focus instead on inorganic or non-living materials to explore primitive and other alternative cooking methods. Participants might try cooking in a pit, grinding ingredients with found stones, or even using alternative cooking fuels like pine sap or rabbit poop. This month’s High Desert Test Kitchen dinner is set for 7 p.m. Monday, January 15 at the Copper Mountain Mesa Community Center on Winters Road off Border. Bring a dish to share that is either made with or inspired by non-living or inorganic material. This is your opportunity to explore the Mojave from a culinary perspective.
