GET READY FOR “REAL ID” AT YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD DMV OFFICE

The requirements for taking domestic flights in the US are about to change. Reporter David Haldane has the details…
Expect to board an airplane sometime after October 1, 2020? If so, you might want to start planning now on getting a Real ID that actually works. Why so soon? Frankly, because it might just take you that long to gather all the documents required.
The so-called Real ID Act of 2005 was passed in the wake of 911, when airport security was a major concern. Basically, it requires passengers on domestic flights to carry recognized forms of “real” dentification such as souped-up driver’s licenses available from the DMV. To get one, just show a U.S. birth certificate, passport, or other documentation proving that you’re legal. You’ll also need proof of your social security number and residency, as well as a marriage or divorce certificate if you’ve changed your name. And, oh yes, you must apply in person.
Don’t worry, though, the deadline’s nearly three years away. And if you miss it, well, you can always just use your passport.
