FATAL JOSHUA TREE FLASH FLOOD VICTIM IDENTIFIED

The coroner’s office has identified the man killed in a flash flood Tuesday as Karl Wyne, 66, of Joshua Tree. Wyne had operated a local electrical business for many years and had served on the Joshua Basin Water District Board of Directors. Bystanders told authorities that Wyne, who was driving southbound on Sunny Vista Road shortly before 4 p.m., drove around cars that were stopped at the wash near Melton Trail due to water crossing the road. Wyne’s 2000 Chevy Blazer became stuck in the mud, and then he and his car were carried about 100 yards downstream by a wall of rushing water in the wash. The Blazer overturned and Wyne was trapped inside. Fire fighters who were on their way to another call were flagged down by bystanders to attempt a rescue. Rescuers were not able to remove Wyne from his car until about 4:15, at which time he was pronounced deceased.
